Coconut Chutney


1/2 coconut
4 red chillies
2 green chillies
1 tsp urad dal
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 cup thick tamarind pulp
a small ball of jaggery
a pinch of asafoetida
oil as needed
salt to taste


    * Heat 1 tbsp oil and fry the red chillies, urad dal and asafoetida to a golden brown colour.
    * Just before removing from the fire, add the green chillies. keep aside.Scrape the coconut and Grind with the fried masala , tamarind pulp, jaggery and salt.Grind to a smooth paste.
    * Heat 1 tbsp oil and fry the mustard seeds.
    * Add to the chutney . mix well. serve with rice , dosas or chapatis.
